Our Story
Welcome to African Icons Restaurant, where every dish tells a story, and every flavor connects you to the heart of the continent. For nearly forty years, our kitchen has stood as a landmark of authentic culinary heritage in the DMV area.
Our journey is one of passion, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to preserving the vibrant traditions of West and Central African cuisine.
🌍 Chapter 1: The Genesis as Casa Africana
Our story began in the late 1980s. At a time when authentic African flavors were incredibly rare in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, we opened our doors under our very first name: Casa Africana.
We quickly became more than just a place to eat. We were a sanctuary for African immigrants longing for the comforting aromas of home, and a welcoming gateway for local food explorers eager to experience true African hospitality. From day one, our mission was clear: cook with love, use authentic spices, and never cut corners.
âš˝ Chapter 2: The Roger Miller Era
As our community grew, so did our identity. We transformed into the legendary Roger Miller Restaurant—a proud homage to Roger Milla, the iconic Cameroonian soccer star who captured the world’s imagination.
Roger Milla is famous for his legendary performances in the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups, where he became one of the first global African football stars.
For decades on Bonifant Street, we became a vibrant cultural hub. Decorated with rich artifacts and echoing with great music, our dining room was alive with energy. It was during this era that our kitchen solidified its reputation for serving unmatched, labor-intensive culinary staples that kept families coming back for generations.
🔥 Chapter 3: Evolving into African Icons Restaurant
Today, as we cross nearly four decades of service, we have evolved into African Icons Restaurant.
This name represents the expansion of our vision. While we still carry our initial vision, our new identity celebrates all African icons: the history-making athletes, the legendary musicians, the visionary leaders, and—most importantly—the everyday ancestors and culture-keepers who passed down these sacred recipes through the generations.
